What's the date...

The months are flying, already the end of April is around the corner. Where is 2010 going? We've had a busy season but its slowing down a bit. With the flow of international teams from the U.S. and Canada, our call was around the clock. Heading to King's Children Home, painting their new buildings, work projects around the base, a successful sports camp for kids during the long 2 week Easter break- it was a gust of activities. We had some great partners join us over these past months...Calgary Christian School- adding a new face to our "Chat n' Chew" (snack shop here on base). Calgary youth group entertaining the kids in Belmopan and serving on base cheerfully! Eastlake Community Church from SC, USA, hosting a sports camp for kids around the area. They intermingled sports with small devotions- highlighting the skills that God has given us to use to glorify Him. The verse for the week was Proverbs 3:5-6. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight." At the end of the week, the team awarded all the participants with a medal to congratulate them for their hard work and dedication over the week. One little girl responded after she received her medal, "Wow, its a real medal!" The kids were so excited at this opportunity! During this week one of our former DTS students, Kevan from southern Belize, came with 2 other young men to run the football (soccer) training. It was amazing to see the a group of young boys rise to the occasion. Dennison and Kevin (teens with soccer training) challenged the players to work hard, play with excellence and never give up...we saw them flourish in this setting. It has perked the interest of these young men to begin a soccer ministry- using sports to instill good values to these young boys and show them Jesus is in every aspect of life.
Right now we have an intern on base, Hannah comes from Crown College in Minnesota. She's a music major, with an emphasis in worship. She's been a blessing, helping at the preschool- teaching songs with actions. Also in the Christian high school-Cayo Christian Academy- Hannah began teaching music theory to middle school students this week. She's jumping to help lead worship in our church with Omar and also Jubilee Church, in Roaring Creek. We are excited to have her here and look forward to God meeting all her expectations as she experiences through a different pair of glasses.
Summer is nearing and with it begins Discipleship Training School- July 1st. We have 4 students thus far and praying for 10 in total. The school will run till November 23rd, ending right before Thanksgiving. Outreach is set to make an impact in Mexico City...all of YWAM is focusing on this area to be the hands and feet of Jesus in this city. The group will also be heading to the Dominican Republic, where Youth With A Mission's 50th Anniversary celebration will be held. Our students will be helping to serve in the conference while having the opportunity to rub shoulders with leaders in YWAM and missions around the world, mainly in the Caribbean. They will receive teaching and history from the founders of YWAM, Loren and Darlene Cunningham. What a great opportunity!!

We are excited for all that lays ahead! Please be in prayer with us for:
  • the students that God wants to be at our Discipleship Training School, beginning July 1st.
  • provisions for the students and staff of this school
  • the DTS school on outreach right now- they're finishing up their outreach in El Salvador.
love and blessings to you all!!

Back to the Game Plan!!

It sure is good to be back in Belize- we arrived Thursday, Jan. 21st with the warm welcome of perspiration- love it!! Omar and I had a marvelous time at home, its such a treat to be with family and friends. I had the chance to connect with a couple friends I haven't seen for a while, visited another friend's new house in Milwaukee, hung out with our 2 nephews and 2 nieces (that was my favorite), special couch chats with my Mum, lunch dates with my aunt, a special game night with the Baierls (whoopknacker!), running away from the kids with my sister, a friend visiting from Canada, shopping trips, ice cream, ice skating, snow tubing, hoop and hollering for the Packers at Grandma's, hockey game with my aunt and uncle, connecting with our church and beloved pastors, surprise visits at my Mum's beauty salon, phone chats with friends and cousins, "Avatar"....it was a full visit. Thanks to all my family and friends who made it special!
We are back on base at a more relaxed pace than when we left. There's a DTS in session right now, led by our friends/family, Jason and Sara Andrews. We have international teams season beginning in February, one of our dear friends is coming Feb.10th with a group of young people- we're looking forward to this!! We can't wait to jump in with our youth group, Joshua Generation, we co- lead with another couple, Dion & Andrea Rodriguez. They have been such a blessing in our life and a real example of serving and putting others before yourself. Also, Omar is jumping in with a youth group in Spanish Lookout, he's helping to teach them about worship and how we reflect this not just in songs but in our lives. Last night was the first night!
Please keep Haiti in your prayers!! One of our former DTS graduates was in Port Au Prince when the earthquake hit. Amanda Turnquist led a team from the ministry she works with in Minnesota, they were teaching at a small house church when the wave shook the ground. She fractured her wrist trying to help a lady from her team get up so she wouldn't be trampled in all the chaos. Amanda said you can't even imagine the devastation! She's planning to go back in April with a construction team...the DTS will also be spending part of their outreach working with YWAM Haiti, continuing relief efforts. Love to all,Omar and Alyssa

oh...the cold

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!
Hope the season is treating you well and you're experiencing the bliss of this special time. I just love Christmas, the hustle and bustle, warm cozy, eggnog, hot chocolate (coffee for me), family, old friends and everything else. I'm in love!!
This past Sunday, the message was about the influences that we're under constantly, the continual attack of what advertisement is going to gnaw away at our conscience to do what they want us to do. I was thinking, being grateful for some of the influences that don't make an impact when we're in Belize. The "keeping up with the Jones" mentality isn't as rich in Belize but some others are around us in abundance. The other part of the message, combating these influences is the question, "Are you grateful?" Am I grateful for what I have, the talents I possess, the people around me, the situation I'm in, how God has equipped me to handle it?
As I look upon this season, I keep asking myself- am I grateful? As we live in this season, trying to keep it before us all year round, am I grateful for the King being born? Am I grateful for the people that surround me?
Hope this challenges you as much as it has for me!!
love to you all!!

Its now almost 3 weeks post DTS and life is so much different. I'm finally uploading pictures so you too can be impressed by this wonderful group of young people. We've had lots of things happen over these past weeks but this special day of graduation is not forgotten...it could be due to the amazing African clothes that were displayed by Dupe, Lili and Santi (our director). Or it could be the stories of the students and how they shared what God had done in their lives over these past 5 months...most assuredly I can see the hand of God in each of their lives. As we shared that night about each student, how we have seen them defy the odds and overcome their fears, my heart was so proud. I have seen the significance why God had brought them here in this time. I can see God's love abundantly when I look at their lives and their faithfulness to Him in these months.
Here are a couple thoughts from the students...
"I think what I've taken from DTS that has helped me now is that life is a choice... The end result greatly depends on what we choose to do. Camela has greatly instilled in me to be responsible even when I don't feel like it...LOL.
But my relationship with God has come to such a level that I can't give it up. People can live on a high coming off a personal time with God. But shortly after or sometimes even rite before they stumble and fall far and hard. Get to know God and the purpose He has for your life and falling will become harder and harder!!" (Florence, Canada/Belize).

"Also DTS helped me to see my purpose and destiny more clearer, Also on out reach I learnt many ways how I can reach out to people right in the environment where they are cause 99 percent of unbelievers wont go into a church and listen to a message so when you go out and reach them its shows the Love and care and they are drawn to it. Yeah DTS was awesome for me !!" (Daniel, Belize).

Thank you!!

Thank you to all our family, friends and everyone who has prayed, supported and encouraged along the way, you are partners in this adventure. We've had a great journey...proud of every student and how they stepped to the challenge of meeting God in uncomfortable situations and different places. We've seen God do miracles in their lives, healing and passing on that blessing to others!!

DTS graduation is this Friday evening at YWAM. Continue to pray for the students (Carilyns, Daniel, Florence, Dupe, Kevan, Camela) that they would be passionate about living the truths they've received in this time.
love to you all!!
